Why All Clothing Manufacturers Should Size by Body Shape

Hipstik's revolutionary size chart by body shape and height, not weight

Hipstik's revolutionary size chart, unlike weight sizing by other brands

Why Body Shape Sizing Is Superior

As a woman, I often feel frustrated by typical off-the-shelf clothing sizes, and I'm sure you do, too. The standard numerical sizes 2, 8, 14, etc. reveal almost nothing about how the garment will actually fit me as a labeled size 10 woman. And don’t get me started on Small, Medium, XL. How many of us have every single one of those sizes in our closet? Size inconsistency has existed since at least 1937.

Here are some numbers that illustrate the insanity of women's clothing sizes: A size 8 dress today is nearly the equivalent of a size 16 dress in 1958. And a size 8 dress of 1958 doesn't even have a modern-day equivalent — the waist and bust measurements of a Mad Men-era 8 come in smaller than today's size 00. – The Washington Post

It seems that instead of focusing on a woman's unique shapes and sizing garments to fit and celebrate these shapes, the clothing industry, especially expensive designers, use vanity sizing - small numbers to give the perception of “smallness.” As women, this feels condescending and silly. We want to be comfortable in our clothing, with the body shape we have to work with, and not defined by the number on the label. We want transparency, not pandering.

Women Are Not the Same

Ask any woman and she'll tell you: We are not all shaped the same, and we each carry weight differently. Some of us have flat tummies and full thighs. Some of us have round tummies and thinner thighs. We all have different bust sizes and heights. That's why typical number sizing is absurd; basic sizes simply can't take all of these factors into account. A tall, triangle-shaped woman will need different styles than a shorter woman with a rectangle figure. They may both wear a size 8, but that same size 8 will look different on them.

Fit Is Important

It's important for the sake of comfort that clothing fit properly. Many women settle for clothes that fit "well enough" because it's difficult to find ready-to-wear items that fit perfectly. Most fashion designers recommend tailoring garments to fit, but that's a costly, time-consuming venture that most women simply don't consider.

Still, when you reach for your favorite dress, you likely feel a burst of confidence. It fits your body type better than your other dresses, and you're aware of it - even though the feeling may be a subconscious one. What if all our clothes fit as well as that go-to dress? To find clothes that are comfortable and flattering, we must discover our own given body shape and use it as a tool to shop for fit-success. That's the only way to feel truly confident in your entire wardrobe, and most clothing manufacturers won't do this for you.

Standard Sizing Isn't Fair

Women have the right to feel comfortable and confident in their clothing, no matter which body shape. Hipstik Legwear launched to celebrate each woman's own beautiful shape and size. While most hosiery brands size by height and weight which doesn’t account for where she carries her weight, Hipstik uses a one-of-a-kind sizing chart that combines height and body shape to create hosiery that fits each woman comfortably.

Hopefully, more brands will soon embrace sizing by body type, too. Hipstik Legwear's revolutionary fit and sizing approach is what the hosiery category needed to profoundly change women's fashion for the better, helping women feel confident and comfortable in their outfits.
